NEG Micon to supply 20 Wind Turbines in Pennsylvania |
|
Commercial operation to be reached by the end of 2003 |
NEG Micon has been selected by FPL Energy, a subsidiary of FPL Group Inc., to supply 20 wind turbines for the Meyersdale Wind Energy Center, located approximately 45 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in Somerset County. NEG Micon's NM72C, a machine designed for medium to high-wind resource areas, features a 72-meter rotor and has an impressive 80-meter tower. Once the 30-megawatt project is built, the NM72C machines will be the tallest wind turbines east of the Mississippi River. "Closely following on FPL Energy's Mountaineer Wind Energy Center, we are thrilled to be once again working with them on another project," said Andris Cukurs, president and CEO of NEG Micon North America. "NEG Micon stands firmly behind its products, programs and services, and we believe this is a large reason why we have garnered repeat business with such a quality group like FPL Energy."
"We are pleased to be working with NEG Micon on this project to bring another source of clean, renewable power to Pennsylvania and the Mid-Atlantic region," said Mike O'Sullivan, senior vice president of development for FPL Energy. FPL Energy will build, own and operate the Meyersdale Wind Energy Center.. The power produced at Meyersdale will be purchased by FirstEnergy Corporation, the nation's fourth largest investor-owned utility that currently serves 4.3 million customers within territories of northern Ohio, most of Pennsylvania and parts of New Jersey. Construction of the wind energy center will begin later this summer with equipment delivery beginning in early September. The entire wind farm is expected to reach commercial operation by the end of 2003.
