USA - Varian Semiconductor Equipment Associates Inc. to deploy wind turbines for electricity

5,000 allocated to design and construct two 1.5 megawatt wind turbines

The Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MTC) Renewable Energy Trust has granted Varian Semiconductor Equipment Associates Inc. 5,000 to design and construct two 1.5 megawatt wind turbines at its world headquarters that could supply the company with up to half of its electricity supply. Varian (Gloucester, Mass.) is a leading producer of ion implantation equipment for manufacturing semiconductors. "Varian's wind project is an example of corporate social responsibility—the company will improve its bottom line while protecting the environment, improving local power quality and helping the region reduce its reliance on imported oil," said Rick Johnson, director of facilities at Varian Semiconductor, in a statement.

The wind turbines will be located at the Blackburn Industrial Park in Gloucester, Mass. and are "the first in New England to harness such a large amount of wind power," according to Renewable Energy Trust Director Warren Leon. The facility, located at the highest point in Gloucester, has strong wind resources and is in an industrial park not in close proximity to residences. In February, the project received significant community support. "There are few wind projects in Massachusetts, so we will be positioned among the leaders in embracing this clean technology." said Gloucester Mayor John Bell, noting that local power generation benefits other electricity customers by helping to maintain grid reliability. Varian is currently seeking approval from the City of Gloucester and expects to begin the installation in late 2007 or early 2008.
