The wind farm to be developed in the so-called Sierra de Juarez

The wind farm will be developed in the so-called Sierra de Juarez. It was assigned a surface of 294.273 hectares,. Which in its first phase will be only used 250. In total they will install up to a thousand wind turbines that could reach a power of between 1,000 and 1,200 MW. The investment required from Sempra Energy-would be up to US $ 5.5 billion. On the environmental impact report presented to SEMARNAT only provides for the first stage of the project, which is in the Jacume ejido and represents 5 % of the plant.

The macro wind farm will be built in four areas, Jacume, La Rumorosa, Cordillera Molina and Sierra de Juárez, which are located in the municipalities of Mexicali, Tecate and Ensenada. The first stage of the project, located north of the village of La Rumorosa will consist of 52 wind turbines and a $ 300 million investment.

When constructed the three remaining stages, the used hectares will be 5.12 hectares, representing only 2 % of the total area. The document sets out that the other areas will be built as new contracts for the supply of clean, renewable electricity for the United States or Mexico market develop.

It was also reported that there will be areas where wind turbines will not be installed because it’s archaeological value as "Vallecitos" area, or because it is a protected natural area as the 1857 Constitution National Park.
